I call it poor little greenhouse because until this year, I have not used it in the 11 years we have lived here. As a matter of fact, it has gone so unused, that a tree usually grows in the middle of it and my husband has to cut it down every year LOL.
And I don't even know what to do with it. Right now I have various pots and seed packs just sitting in it, but other than that, I haven't used it for anything. I really wish I knew what to do with it and am open to suggestions. I know when the cold weather comes, I can stick my plants and flowers in there. Maybe when spring is coming, I can start some seeds in my greenhouse, but what else can I do with it?
And it looks clear from the inside, but the outside looks really dingy and cloudy. Can I wash it with something and make it so the sun can shine through better?
It has handy hooks and nails everywhere. I know the person who had it before us probably had lots of things going on in this little greenhouse. I wish I could go back in time and take a peek. I need a plan for it!
Just to show you how neglected it is, I had no idea this little thermometer was in there until I started taking these pictures. I looked at it and thought what is that? I thought it was a rain gauge until I got a closer look. How pitiful is that? Well I am not going to dwell on what I haven't done with it. I am going to make a plan and take care of her from now on.
Kelly your greenhouse is a nice size....I can see why you would want to use it. If its just hard water maybe white vinegar and lots of elbow grease could get it off however if the plastic is actually discolored I would not know however if I could not use it as a greenhouse maybe you could use it for storage or a place to work on and pot your plants before you place them elsewhere. ReplyDeleteHow cool! I was so wishing I had a greenhouse last winter. I'd have loved to have a place to start my plants for the spring garden.
ReplyDeleteAs for discoloration... it doesn't look too dark.
I'd try cleaning it with some vinegar and water like the previous poster said...even some bio degradeable Palmolive...diluted of course and lots of elbow grease!
But I'd try using it anyway... You can put a thermometer in there over the winter and check it to see how warm it gets... You're talking about the sun here... it is able to provide for heat for a densely covered canopy in the tropical rain forest. I'm almost willing to bet it can warm up your little greenhouse. Just put that thermometer in there and check the temps during the day...and set your alarm clock and check the temps at night too~

It is a very nice little greenhouse! If it were mine, I would take everything out, rake and level out the floors, put down some pea size gravel, wash the panels inside and out, hang a peg board up on one side and use it to hang all my tools, bring in some plastic bins to keep potting soil, fertilizers, and potting trays. Think of ways to utilize those baskets...maybe grow different types of lettuce and herbs in them. Fill those rafters with some ferns. Ask hubby to put in a plastic washtub sink and hook up the water. The possibilities are endless. Hope I have given you some inspiration!

Thank you for all the encouragement and tips! I am hoping to bring some of my herbs in. Will have to research the temps some of them need. I have lots of ideas written down now!
ReplyDeleteDepending on how cold it gets in your area, you could grow greens all winter long. Fresh kale, spinach, lettuce, chard...or, if you really don't know what to do with it, feel free to box it up and ship it to me. LOL
ReplyDeleteHa, Andrea, maybe if you lived close I could get my husband to make you one! It looks like just a wood frame with the clear panels nailed around it. I am in south Alabama, so maybe I can try growing some things in it. It doesn't get freezing cold until January usually. Thanks!
