One of your best resources

Just in the few months since I decided I wanted to live simply and grow more of our food on our property, I have learned a lot from friends, family and neighbors.  I never knew so much could be learned just from the people I know.  I thought I had to do a bunch of research online and buy a bunch of books, while all along, there was plenty information right in front of me.  Until you show an interest in something, how is someone to know they can share things with you on that subject?

Since I have started showing a big interest in gardening, my mother and husband's aunt have sent me pots and clippings off their plants and offered me advice.  One of my friends is really into canning and when I canned some salsa the other day, she gave me a few tips I could not have gotten out of a book.  One of my neighbors noticed me out in the yard a lot and we started talking.  He was telling me about his garlic.  I got so excited because that is the first thing I have wanted to plant.  Everything I have read said it is easy, but I did not know what kind to get or where to get it.  Well next thing I know, he has sent me some garlic bulbs to stick in the ground.

So, if you want to learn something, try to find out if anyone else you know is interested in it.  They can probably be a big help.

  1. It's really amazing how much people are willing to share when it's an area of interest to them. Of course, blogging is a great way to meet those friends too!
