Homemade Hummingbird Water

I crossed a few things off my  list this morning, one of them being to wash out, fill and hang up my hummingbird feeders.  I left one outside was so nasty and had so many dead ants in it! I need to be better at putting them up after the season is over. I have determined though if anybody asks what I want for Mother's Day, I will say hummingbird feeders!

I just love to sit on the front porch and watch them forever.

I used to use the hummingbird feed mix you can buy at the store, but a friend of mine told me that she just uses sugar and water.  I looked it up and the most common recipe seems to be 4 parts water to 1 part sugar.  My husband thinks it needs red dye, but the birds come as long as the part they drink out of is colorful.  You can add a little food coloring or some of a red Kool-Aid pack if you want to add some color.

You need to make sure the water is luke warm when you mix it with the sugar or else it might not dissolve as good.  Hopefully I will get some hummingbird pictures to share soon! Once they find my feeders, there are quite a few and they fight over them.  It is so entertaining :)

  3. I make my own too! No, you don't need color and generally the feeder has some red. I need more feeders though, they fight each other so badly and are so intent that they almost run into me.
